Title
How differential geometry can help to make sustainable architectural structures
Abstract
From one architectural structure to another, with an equivalent program, we observe up to a factor of 10 on the environmental impacts. The differences come from the design choices in the form and structural typology. These choices of form and structure are also dependent on the choice of material and constructive technology. To move towards an economical design, it is, therefore, necessary to master these parameters and their interactions in order to find a compromise and allow creativity and structural innovation. Original methods have thus been developed by O Baverel and his team (Navier, Thinkshell) to generate shapes and geometries with specific constructive properties combining technological simplicity, and mechanical efficiency to give architectural structures with limited environmental impact.
